Great. Posed in front of Guy Fieri&#8217;s star on the Walk of Fame? Instagram&#8217;s gonna love it. But now, it&#8217;s time to explore the inspiration, history, and cultural diversity of Los Angeles. Much of Downtown L.A. has been revitalized by stylish hotels, restaurants, galleries, and fashion retailers, so there\u2019s plenty to see and do. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s a list of what any design-savvy visitor needs to see and do in the City of Angels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2><strong>Fashion District<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/embed?pb=!1m18!1m12!1m3!1d44028.786376693104!2d-118.26576400611943!3d34.02691100289181!2m3!1f0!2f0!3f0!3m2!1i1024!2i768!4f13.1!3m3!1m2!1s0x80c2c62cfd4eff7f%3A0x82c0c2123816b9b6!2sFashion%20District%2C%20Los%20Angeles%2C%20CA!5e0!3m2!1sen!2sus!4v1681227201191!5m2!1sen!2sus\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" style=\"border:0;\" allowfullscreen=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\"><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This expansive swath southeast of the Convention Center isn\u2019t just a garment hub\u2014it\u2019s also a destination for music lovers and artsy-craftsy types. Grab a bite at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sonoratown.com\">Sonoratown<\/a>, the taco spot of the moment\u2014we recommend a taco with chorizo or the chivichanga. Check out the nearby Los Angeles Flower Market and <a href=\"http:\/\/originallaflowermarket.com\/vendor\/lees-orchid\/\">Moskatel\u2019s<\/a>, an eye-popping emporium of craft supplies.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2><strong>Downtown L.A. (a.k.a. DTLA)<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/embed?pb=!1m18!1m12!1m3!1d52898.89335855435!2d-118.28384202673986!3d34.039232111481205!2m3!1f0!2f0!3f0!3m2!1i1024!2i768!4f13.1!3m3!1m2!1s0x80c2c634253dfd01%3A0x26fe52df19a5a920!2sDowntown%20Los%20Angeles%2C%20Los%20Angeles%2C%20CA!5e0!3m2!1sen!2sus!4v1681227224874!5m2!1sen!2sus\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" style=\"border:0;\" allowfullscreen=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\"><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Downtown L.A., a highly-walkable neighborhood, is home to iconic landmarks like Los Angeles City Hall (an Art Deco classic frequently featured in film), Pershing Square, and the Angels Flight funicular railway. Fortify yourself for a tour of the area at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bottegalouie.com\">Bottega Louie<\/a>, a guilt-inducing gilt and marble French cafe with a macaron display that may revolutionize the colors on your next mood board. Then, head down Grand Avenue toward the glistening Cubist crumple of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.laphil.com\">Frank Gehry\u2019s Walt Disney Concert Hall<\/a> to reach twin beacons of 20th and 21st century art. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.moca.org\">MOCA,<\/a> designed by 2019 Pritzker Prize-winning architect Arata Isozaki, has a deep collection of American abstract pieces, Pop art, and sculptural gems from notable artists. One of them, local artist Larry Bell, unveiled his red glass construction \u201cBill and Coo\u201d on the museum\u2019s plaza in 2019.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/www.ceros.com\/inspire\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2021\/03\/img_6048f323ce58f.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>&#8220;Bill and Coo,&#8221; by Larry Bell&nbsp;<br><em>courtesy of The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, photo by Elon Schoenholz<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Across the street, the free-admission <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thebroad.org\/\">The Broad<\/a> is an impressive space filled with notable Ruscha paintings and array of provocative works by Basquiat, Koons, and Murakami. Nearby, you can peek into the 1893 Bradbury Building, a proto-modernist office with a skylit atrium and ornate ironwork, notably featured in <em>Blade Runner<\/em> and <em>500 Days of Summer<\/em>. It\u2019s across the street from the bustling <a href=\"https:\/\/www.grandcentralmarket.com\">Grand Central Market<\/a>, where you\u2019ll find artisan food and cafes (including the impeccably branded Eggslut).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2><strong>Little Tokyo<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/embed?pb=!1m18!1m12!1m3!1d13222.410787985125!2d-118.25005033007898!3d34.05406123816171!2m3!1f0!2f0!3f0!3m2!1i1024!2i768!4f13.1!3m3!1m2!1s0x80c2c64f59427c77%3A0xf14f36b65ce4fe04!2sLittle%20Tokyo%2C%20Los%20Angeles%2C%20CA!5e0!3m2!1sen!2sus!4v1681227357288!5m2!1sen!2sus\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" style=\"border:0;\" allowfullscreen=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\"><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Kawaii,<\/em> the celebration of cuteness, rages hard in this small but lively Japanese-American cultural parish a couple of blocks from City Hall. Along with sushi and ramen bars, the neighborhood is dotted with shops selling Sanrio, anime, and manga, as well as traditional Japanese housewares and brilliantly-packaged toys and snacks.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Check the Tokyo Japanese Lifestyle outlet for bargains, <a href=\"https:\/\/japangeles.com\">Japangeles<\/a> for street wear, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.popkiller.us\">Popkiller<\/a> for clothing collaborations with artists like Tate Kayoko and Naoshi. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/www.ceros.com\/inspire\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2021\/03\/img_6048f324f1e1b.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>Artist collaboration T-shirts at Popkiller<br><em>Credit: Jeremy Steenblik<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Little Tokyo also offers highbrow attractions like the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.janm.org\">Japanese American National Museum<\/a>, which features art and historical artifacts, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.moca.org\/visit\/geffen-contemporary\">the Geffen Contemporary at MOCA<\/a>. The latter is a Frank Gehry-renovated police car warehouse, currently featuring works from MOCA\u2019s collection of contemporary luminaries like Mike Kelley and Chris Burden. It also houses an installation of Barbara Kruger\u2019s nearly 600-square-foot mural, \u201cUntitled (Questions).\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2><strong>Arts District<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/embed?pb=!1m18!1m12!1m3!1d13224.33425614916!2d-118.2418821300851!3d34.04172748821568!2m3!1f0!2f0!3f0!3m2!1i1024!2i768!4f13.1!3m3!1m2!1s0x80c2c63a54b5873f%3A0xd46d538dad108ae0!2sArts%20District%2C%20Los%20Angeles%2C%20CA!5e0!3m2!1sen!2sus!4v1681227473911!5m2!1sen!2sus\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" style=\"border:0;\" allowfullscreen=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\"><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sandwiched between Little Tokyo and the Los Angeles River, this low-slung industrial stretch is a tangle of power lines, renovated warehouses, and some of the city\u2019s finest murals. The works of <a href=\"https:\/\/cleonpeterson.com\/projects\">Cleon Peterson<\/a> and the calligraphic tags of RETNA are featured in the Arts District\u2014be sure to check them out. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/www.ceros.com\/inspire\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2021\/03\/img_6048f3261e6ef.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>Cleon Peterson mural in Arts District<br><em>Credit: Jeremy Steenblik<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Though the area has exploded southward, the main drags are still 3rd Street and Santa Fe Avenue. That\u2019s where the L.A. outpost of the Zurich-based global gallery <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hauserwirth.com\">Hauser &amp; Wirth<\/a> commands nearly 11,000 square feet in a former mill.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re in a mood to shop, <a href=\"https:\/\/hammerandspear.com\/\">Hammer &amp; Spear<\/a> offers equally handsome home decor. Design fans will want to check out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hennesseyingalls.com\">Hennessy &amp; Ingalls<\/a>, the art and architecture bookstore at the Southern California Institute of Architecture.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also take note of the <a href=\"https:\/\/aplusd.org\">a+d museum<\/a>, whose exhibits champion progressive architecture and design. Proof of the area\u2019s rapid gentrification can be found in the parade of next-big-thing restaurants like <a href=\"https:\/\/baveldtla.com\">Bavel<\/a>, high-end retailer <a href=\"https:\/\/losangeles.doverstreetmarket.com\">Dover St. Market<\/a>, and Row DTLA, a 30-acre complex of groovy restaurants and retail. Of course, the Arts District is filled with established and emerging galleries and art spaces including Cirrus (which shows John Baldessari and Judy Chicago), <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nightgallery.ca\">Night Gallery,<\/a> the Romanian-based <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nicodimgallery.com\">Nicodim Gallery<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.parraschheijnen.com\/artists\">Parrasch Heijnen Gallery <\/a>(which exhibits works by Ken Price and Peter Voulkos).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2><strong>Chinatown&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/embed?pb=!1m18!1m12!1m3!1d26440.734937078334!2d-118.24910909450603!3d34.06715920240575!2m3!1f0!2f0!3f0!3m2!1i1024!2i768!4f13.1!3m3!1m2!1s0x80c2c659f50c318d%3A0xe2ffb80a9d3820ae!2sChinatown%2C%20Los%20Angeles%2C%20CA!5e0!3m2!1sen!2sus!4v1681227682552!5m2!1sen!2sus\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" style=\"border:0;\" allowfullscreen=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\"><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Grab some noodles and boba tea, shop for cheesy souvenirs, and see some of the best neon signs in the city in this highly walkable, extremely touristy neighborhood. Cruise the heart of Chinatown\u2060\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/place\/Chung+King+Rd,+Los+Angeles,+CA+90012\/@34.0658442,-118.2406251,17z\/data=!4m5!3m4!1s0x80c2c659a8aac0fd:0xe58ec2802f95717b!8m2!3d34.0661597!4d-118.2384418\">Chung King Road<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/place\/Gin+Ling+Way,+Los+Angeles,+CA+90012\/@34.0655926,-118.2395391,17z\/data=!3m1!4b1!4m5!3m4!1s0x80c2c65972ed792f:0x87dcb7e18e23f815!8m2!3d34.0655882!4d-118.2373451\">Gin Ling Way\u2060<\/a>\u2014for cutting-edge art galleries<strong>, <\/strong>intimate performance spaces<strong>,<\/strong> unique experiences like the perfume-centric <a href=\"http:\/\/artandolfaction.com\/\">Institute of Art and Olfaction<\/a>, and the bamboo-and-Chinoiserie lounge <a href=\"https:\/\/www.generallees.com\/\">General Lee&#8217;s<\/a>. It is possible to walk between certain destinations, and we\u2019ve noted the attractions that are close enough for walking, but be sure to plan ahead. DTLA still has areas that are considered dangerous.
